Region of Waterloo and St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph are the only two Home and Community Care Support Services (HCCSS) funded overnight respite options for community dwelling older adults within Waterloo Wellington. The programs are the only ones available to support cognitively impaired older adults in a secure setting. While the programs are funded through the HCCSS and the focus of service and support is for those in Waterloo Wellington the service can be extended to those that are outside of the HCCSS area. It does pose a challenge as some of the programs have waitlists for access and this could potentially limit opportunity for local residents to access the support. However, with the ebb and flow of program needs, each referral will be reviewed and if suitable to the program and if space is available the respective organization would offer the service.
